St. Xavier’s College, Goa, was founded by the Archdiocese of Goa in June 1963 and was affiliated to the University of Bombay in the same year. In the academic year 1963 – 64, it conducted only the First Year Arts and First Year Science classes. In the academic year 1964 – 65, it conducted the Intermediate Arts and Science classes as well. In the academic year 1965 – 66, the B.A, and B.Sc. Courses were added. In June 1969, registration of candidates for M.Sc. in Physical Chemistry and Botany started.
In June 1971, registration of M.A. candidates was started and in June 1973 for Ph.D. in Philosophy, and for Portuguese in 1974-75. In 1975-76 the College started classes for the Higher Secondary students as per 10 + 2 + 3 scheme of Education.
In 1975, the College course was reduced from 4 to 3 years and instead of First Year and Intermediate, Std. XI and XII were introduced. The College course was regulated by the University and Std. XI and XII by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.
Since in 1975 all institutions affiliated to the Goa Board were not in position to cater to the needs of Higher Secondary students, the two Stds. XI and XII were initially attached to the existing Colleges, and three independent H.S.S. Streams were started with the recommendation to constitute all H.S.S. sections attached to the Colleges into a separate unit called +2 stage in due course. In June 1988 according to the recommendations of the National Policy of Education 1986, a new stream besides the existing three, namely Arts, Commerce, Science was introduced. This stream is called Vocational stream and comes in packages of 5 to 6 subjects.
From June 1988, the St. Xavier’s H.S.S. started offering to the students three packages in the Vocational stream: (1) Electronic Assembly Technician, (2) Insurance, (3) Accountancy, Auditing and Income Tax. From June 1998, the nomenclature of the first and third above mentioned Vocational courses was changed to Maintenance and Repair of Electrical & Electronic Domestic Appliances and Accountancy & Auditing, respectively. From June 1999, a new Vocational course, Travel & Tourism was introduced, and from June 2001 another Vocational Course, Bakery & Confectionery, was introduced.
The aim of this College and H.S.S. is to provide the benefit of a balanced all-round education to its students with a view to forming young men and women who will be intellectually able, high-minded and disciplined citizens of their country and will serve it well in the various walks of life they later choose for themselves.
The College and the H.S.S. sections had been founded by the Archdiocese primarily to enable Catholic parents to fulfil their duties towards their children. Students are admitted without any discrimination or reference to caste and creed, and the rights of conscience are fully respected.
We have been given an A Grade Accreditation under the Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana- Educational Quality Improvement Project.
